I'm curious. Anyone have any experience with Verizon Broadband Access Cards? I want to get the internet through them and was curious what the connections and service are like? I'm not really interested in FiOs, just in the cards you can plug in anywhere you go.

Thanks in advance =-)

LJ News Special Edition: Server Move, Permanent Account Sale Update, A La Carte Userpics
Welcome to a Very Special Edition of LJ News.

Moving Day and What It Means for You

Moving What Where?

The long-awaited server move takes place this Tuesday, November 18, at 8:00 a.m. PST. We're moving the site from servers based in San Francisco to the servers in our new data center in Montana. A massive data move like this takes a lot of heavy lifting, and to haul all that data from San Francisco to Montana, we have to take the site down, starting at 8:00 a.m. PST on Tuesday morning. We don't think the move will take more than four hours, but there's always the possibility that it could take longer (the best laid plans and all).

What Does This Mean for You?

During the downtime, nothing on LJ will be available—no posting, no Friends page, no LJ mail, nada. When we bring the site back up, we're going to ease into it rather than open up a floodgate of traffic. Posting might not be immediately available or the site could be slow to load for a while.

New servers mean new IP addresses, so it's possible that LJ mail might not reach your email inbox because your email provider or client doesn't recognize the new IP addresses. We're working with email providers to whitelist the new IPs. There are a few things you can do on your end:
  • Add these two IP addresses to your "allowed senders" list (or whitelist) and address book in your email client: 208.93.0.18 and 208.93.0.50. These are the new IPs for sending comments notifications and LJ mail to your email inbox.

  • Add lj_notify@livejournal.com and webmaster@livejournal.com to your email address book.

If you can't edit the spam or junk filters in your email client, you may need to disable them entirely. Make these changes just before 8:00 a.m. PST on Tuesday morning or shortly after the site comes back up to ensure that your LJ mail makes it to your inbox.

Those of you who use domain aliasing to forward your domain to your LiveJournal will need to create a CNAME record that maps to livejournal.com. Please note that we're no longer supporting the A record. For more information, check the domain forwarding FAQ.

Before the move, you can check [info]lj_maintenance for complete details about the planned downtime. During the move, you can check status.livejournal.org for updates about the site's status.

Permanent Account Sale Delayed

We regret to inform you that due to the server move, the Permanent Account sale has been pushed back to December 4, rather than November 20 as announced in the last news post. After the virtual dust has settled from the move, we'll be able to turn our attention to the Permanent Account sale. Except for the start date, the details remain the same: You have a limited opportunity to purchase LJ for life for only $175. It's a bummer to delay the sale, but on the bright side, you have more time to save up.

But What About A La Carte Userpics?

We know we promised more information about a la carte userpics, and we're sorry that details have not been forthcoming (blame it on the move). We're still planning on having a la carte userpics, but we don’t have any details yet. When the move is over, we'll have more information. We're sorry for the delay.

130/365 - Chino Hills Fire

I can see this from my house. We were on the 60 fwy going towards Chino and all you see is smoke covering the sky.

It's been like this all day, and the fires are getting worse.

Driving home was horrible. What usually takes us 10 minutes to drive ended up taking us 2 whole hours to get home. Freeways were being shut down.

I know a family being evacuated from their home tonight. I'm praying that the fires give us a bit of a break.

I hadn't realized that there was a glare right on the clothes, which was actually the sign of the store across the way.

This semester can't end soon enough!
It's starting to get down to the end. but the work just keeps piling up on me...
I wont have much of a break either because I'm taking a winter session course.
At least it'll be easy, so I've heard.

Last night Tim, Caron, Lauren and I went to The Blarney Stone up on Tipp hill in Syracuse.
Our pal Mike and his band was playing. I took a bunch of photo's which I will upload when I
get home. I don't ever remember to bring my card reader with me when I come up here for the
weekend. There is a photo specific course being offered next semester.. half of the semester you
meet and discuss things find a theme you will be using for your shots once in Amsterdam. and then
going to Amsterdam for Spring Break.. I want to go but I don't think I will. besides, I have one more
year until I haven't been to Europe in 4 years... and I've been 4 years before that time.. so it only
makes sense right? maybe if my brother is still in Portugal I'll go there... I want to go to France when
I graduate... and study the language intensely.. and then become fluent.

Pics of the apartment
So I thought that everyone might like to see pics of my new apartment! I will be nice and considerate and put them behind an LJ cut though, because I hate to bother the layouts and internet speed of everyone!

There are twelve of them, rather large in size, sorry about the pic spam but I just love it here so much, Jim has made it so perfect for us!
Here are the pics of our 2 room + kitchen + dining area apartment! )

I just want to talk a little about my return to LJ as well. I was feeling really awful about the way I left so suddenly and I just want to apologize for that. I hope nobody was worried. I have a really great life here and, I dont know, I left and then I missed everyone. Finally I thought, bollocks I will just go back and anyone who still wants to read my journal I am so glad that you didnt cut me off! I am sorry. I am also very glad to be back and even though I might not post much about the day to day at the moment, I am still reading my FL daily now and commenting when I have something to say. I am glad to be back, you guys add something to my social life and I am sorry I didnt come back sooner!

MOVING SALE!
I'm moving around Dec. 20th and I have some stuff I need to get rid of before I go.

(xposted to [info]fredonia and [info]buffalo_dorks)

Pictures behind the cut:
[x] Loveseat/Pullout and Chair set ** ($100 obo)
[x] Waterbed ** (free to a good home - it's been heavily used for at least ten years, and a couple of the tubes are leaking so I took them out - otherwise it's going in the trash)
[x] Desk w/detachable book shelf ($50 obo)
[x] Stereo ($20 obo)
[x] 2 TVs ** (free to good homes - they've been well used. The larger one has a bit of a fuzzy picture but it works fine, and the smaller one is 13 inches with a VCR built in, and I've had it since 2001. Sometimes the screen likes to change colors, like it's been magnetized, in the corners. But only sometimes. Otherwise it's been my faithful companion throughout many moves.) The TVs have been claimed!
[x] Coffee Table ($15 obo)

** I won't be willing to part with these (starred items) until the week of Dec. 15, since I don't want to have to sleep on the floor for a month, and I still have cable until then.

You must come pick the furniture up as I only have a small car and obviously can't bring it to you. I live in Dunkirk, down by the train tracks (if you're coming from Buffalo I'm about two miles from Thruway exit 59). I will help you move it out of here, though.

The stereo and TVs I will meet you somewhere if necessary, otherwise you can come pick them up too.

Anything I don't sell will go to Goodwill/The Salvation Army, whichever one is down by Central Ave (except the bed which will go in the trash. I'm only offering it up on here in case someone wants a free waterbed, it's not in the best condition and it's pretty squeaky).

Come See The Goods! )

So comment here or e-mail me at sellmysoul@gmail.com if you're interested in anything. Send me an offer if you don't want to give me what I'm asking - I'm totally flexible, I just really want all of this out of my apartment before I move!

Hello My Lovely Dorks!
I am in dire need of a filing cabinet.
I posted on Buffalo Freecycle about this. My post was rejected. I reworded the whole thing. Rejected again. I emailed the mod asking why, and I have gotten no response. This was all about 2 weeks ago.
So, I bring my issue to you.
Does anyone have a filing cabinet they are no longer using or want? I really need to get some semblance of organization in my life.
Thank you much!

Community Spotlight: Going Postal, Flash & more!

Going Postal

We receive lots of great art and letters from Gaia fans, and once in a while we've featured them on the Going Postal page. Sadly, with all the cool stuff that's been going on around here, we just haven't had time to update it lately. Thankfully, that's changing!

So, keep sending us your art and letters, and be sure to check Going Postal for updates (hint: it's updated now!). Don't forget to comment on the artist's profiles, too!

Tell us what you think about Going Postal here.

To Flash or Not to Flash

You might have noticed that we use Flash a lot on this site, for stuff like zOMG! and Aquarium. We'd love to hear what your experiences with Flash have been like here, so please [url=http://www.gaiaonline.com/forum/t.45058733/ ]let us know![/url]

A Rose is Not Just a Rose

Your parents probably told you never to take candy from strangers, right? Well, you should also be wary of accepting trades from users you don't know. While accepting items from strangers won't poison you, it can lead to you getting ripped off. Case in point, here's a famous trade that happens often:

Strange User: "Hey, trade me your Death Whisper (approx 43,000 gold) and I'll give you a Winter Rose (approx 39,000 gold)."

You: "Alright, let me go send that right now."

The strange user then sends you a White Rose Wristlet Corsage (approx 350 gold) instead of the promised Winter Rose. You, not noticing the subtle but important difference, accept the trade and get royally ripped off! Oof! Don't let this happen to you!

Aquarium Update: Hamuhamu & Lazor Fish, More Room

Mirai: Heeeyyy everyone! Me and my good friend Barrett are back to bring you some exciting fishy news!

    Barrett: Hey g--

Mirai: Let's not waste anybody's time with needless salutations, buster! We've got some big news to deliver, don't we?

Barrett: Yup, sure do. The Overseer has decided to allow more fish in each aquarium. Your tank can now hold a maximum of 12 fish at a time!

Mirai: Yay! More fishy goodness! There are also two brand new fish on sale in Phin Phang and the Marketplace. First up is the Lazor Fish. What can you tell us about this one, Barrett?

Barrett: These hardy fellahs have tiny little laser cannons mounted on their backs. I'm not entirely sure who is arming fish, since that's kind of strange, but they're definitely dangerous. I'd suggest keeping on their good side.

Mirai: Oh! Oh! Tell us about adorable little Hamuhamu!

Barrett: Hamuhamu is a curious critter working on a bachelor's degree in marine biology. He's definitely not a fish, but certainly eager to study fish behavior up close. Reminds me of myself in a lot of ways.

Mirai: Fascinating as always, Barrett! Say, I haven't seen you in awhile. You're always so busy watching fish. How's that going?

Barrett: It never ends. Er, I mean it's an awesome privilege to get to work with so many great fish. Wouldn't trade it--

Mirai: What a great attitude! Especially since I'm sure a lot of fish pass away under your care.

Barrett: Well, I try not to dwell on that, Mirai.

Mirai: I hope you're giving all those dearly departed fishies proper burials, buster!

Barrett: Um, yeah, uh, I... they're taken care of... the fish...

Mirai: Are you okay? You're turning white as a cuttlefish and starting to sweat.

Barrett: *Gulp* Mirai, you look really great today!

Mirai: Really? Why thank you, Barrett. That was unexpected but entirely accurate.

Barrett: Just thought you should know.

Mirai: Well, that does it for this week. May the Overseer smile upon all of you! Be sure to stop by Phin Phang for a visit!

    Barrett: Bye bye!

For the full report from Dr. Singh and her very special guest, please read on...

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Dr. Singh: Hi, guys! Welcome to the Evolving Item Report, where you can learn all the latest news about Gaia's coolest items. I've got a very special guest with me this week: Purvis, the son of legendary cattleman Rancher Bill! How are you, Purvis?

    Purvis: Wulp, got problems.

Dr. Singh: So I've heard! Rancher Bill was scheduled to be today's guest host, but he's been having so much trouble with the animated garlic in his fields that he had to cancel and send Purvis instead. How's the situation over there, Purvis?

Purvis: Pa says I got a soft head on account of I fall down a lot.

Dr. Singh: That's... very nice. Well, we've got a very important update today: one of our most magnificent items is reaching its final stage, we've got a ton of great evolutions, and we've finally worked out a compromise for finished items with too many poses. Shall we get started?

    Purvis: A-hyup.

Dr. Singh: Great! Well, here's the big, big news: Padmavati's Lotus is concluding its incredible journey! It started as a beautiful flower and became more and more strange and serpentine... just as I suspected, it took the form of a beautiful naga, an ancient cobra deity. Truly extraordinary!

Purvis: I got my own wheelbarruh. Shoulda brung 'er.

Dr. Singh: Yes... well, maybe next time. While the Lotus is finishing up, some of our coolest items are just getting started: Captain Ara's Nestegg is evolving this week, giving some hints of what might be in store for this pirate treasure. The Fallen Wish is coming along beautifully, as well!

Purvis: I got a wish. I wish I was a cowboy and I got a skeleton mask, and the mask lets me wrassle real good. Wrassle bad guys. I saw it on a movie show. Hey. Hey, lady. Hey. Y'wanna wrassle?

Dr. Singh: No thank you, Purvis. Let's just talk about these items, OK? The mysterious Coocoon is slowly showing signs of change, and our cute little cobweb pal Dander is dustier than ever. You're not allergic, are you, Purvis?

Purvis: Naw, but I do gotta use the turlet. Y'all got a water-turlet?

Dr. Singh: Just one more thing! Lately, we've had a glitch that prevented completed evolving items from showing all their poses; we've come up with a temporary solution to help people get the full benefit of their completed items. Sometime soon, Flynn will open up an exchange program which will let you split a completed evolving item into two items, each with its own set of poses. You won't be able to sell or trade your split items; if you want to sell or trade them, you can visit Flynn's exchange again and combine them back into one. It's kind of weird, but it's the best we can do for the moment! We'll let you know when we've got it working.

Purvis: Nevermind 'bout that turlet anymore. I done took care of it.

Dr. Singh: I... uh... can we maybe get a janitor in here? That's all for this week! I'd like to thank Purvis for his... contribution. Remember, you can share your opinions about this week's items in our evolving item poll. Goodnight!

[list]Purvis: Wait! Pa told me I gotta tell people to help him with them awful garlics. If y'wanna help beat on 'em, gotta visit our Ranch! It's out west, past Barton Town. Hope I sees ya there...

LJ Downtime
bleh...

Quoted from:[info]lj_maintenance (since I can't figure out how to link to the actual entry)
We're pulling the plug! And putting it back in a different location! Ok, that was bad.

Seriously though, our data center move -- from San Francisco to Montana -- is scheduled for THIS TUESDAY, November 18, 2008 at 16:00 UTC (this equates to 8AM Pacific timezone) and will last for 4 hours. Unfortunately it'll be total downtime for all our sites and services -- no posting, no reading, no email.

Another [info] news announcement will be posted on Monday November 17, including links to updated FAQs that you'll want to check out before the move.

As always, status.livejournal.org will have any updates during the move so bookmark it and check it out for the latest news.

All of us at LiveJournal have been eagerly looking forward to this move and I want to thank you for your patience and understanding as we put the finishing touches on something that will allow us to bring you an even better product in the future.
Though for us in the Ops and Engineering teams, we'll be REALLY happy if, on Tuesday, everything just works the same way it did on Monday. Heh.

Any Mechanics?
Hey gang,

I've got a 1996 Hyundai Elantra that needs three fuel lines replaced, leaking enough that it won't pass NY inspection. Pep boys says 4 hours of labor/$513. Do we have anyone in the family that could beat that? I need to get the car in shape enough to get to Austin in after the new year..

Just figured I'd check with my dorks!

128/365 - Good Morning Love!

My hunny says clicking into my Flickr is one of the first things he does every morning. Which I guess would explain why he is the one that gets on my case the most when I don't update daily.

Sooooo, taking that into consideration, this one's for you.

Good Morning Love =)

I hope you have a nice day at work today!

I Love You!

I have to take a week long trip that I really can't get out of.

Do any of you have experience on boarding your pets? (I have a cat specifically). He hates everyone else but me and I'm stressing because I really don't want him to think that I abandoned him! Sounds silly I know but fellow cat dorks will understand. He also gets lonely and stressed really easily.

So I guess I need Kennel recommendations or pet sitting recommendations.

And to note, having friends come to watch him isn't an option. (Long story)

Thanks in advance!

EDIT!: We have it taken care of!

Alright, so here's where I'm at.
I've had a fucked up hard time this year, but I didn't realize until the other night that I have had some of the most awesome expiriences of my life this year as well.
I'm done with looking back and having regrets. Nichole and I have fucked so much shit up (in a good way), and its only looking up.

Now I just need the money to start rolling in and I'm going back to school for what I actually have interest in.

[b]What are you wearing? [/i]

Ever seen an awesome avatar and wondered how it was put together? We've just released a feature to help you out: in the dropdown list under a person's avatar, there's now a "View Equipped List" option which shows you everything the person is wearing.

Some of you may want to keep your secret avatar-making methods hidden. You can go to your Preferences screen and uncheck the "Equipped List" box to hide your list from prying eyes.

GIM: You're on!

A small change to GIM, our instant message system: when you sign on to your Gaia account, you'll automatically be logged in to GIM by default. If you'd prefer not to be, you can visit your Account Preferences page and choose not to be logged in automatically. Happy chatting!

Time Warp...
Started watching this on Discovery last week (maybe the week before) it comes on right before Mythbusters.

There is so much that goes on you don't realize till they capture it in slo-mo.

Mythbusters last night was pretty good too... Who would have ever thought you could put a shine on poo... (btw, that part was pretty gross).

I'll have to catch Top Chef on repeat this weekend.

Pretty Random Question..
Hi All Dorks,

Maybe someone can help me out.. I want to plan a little surprise party for my boyfriend who turns 30 this year.. The problem is his birthday is the day after Christmas as I was thinking of maybe doing the party a week or so before..

Now I am not big Party Person and have never ever planned a surprise party in my life.. Does anyone know of an affordable place to rent out? Or some Ideas on what to do at the party..I know kind of lame but any ideas would help!

I guess I'm mainly worried about finding someplace to hold it, since it's so close to the holidays and I'm a procrastinator and should have had this done months ago!

Thank you in advance for anyone that can help!!

Shelly :O)

127/365 - Shopping Makes Me Feel Better
127/365 - Shopping Makes Me Feel Better

I had not shopped for clothes in a while.

Thalia wanted to go to a clothing store close to home, so I picked her up after work and off we went!

This store is so huge, and they have everything you could ever imagine, and at a good price too!

We pretty much wanted to take the whole store in our pockets that day. I bought this Jacket for only 15.99, and a purse because I needed a bigger one that could actually fit my camera.

I was a very happy camper today =)

126/365 - Never Satisfied
126/365 - Never Satisfied

This bear was originally handed to me with a Dodgers uniform. I bought this skeleton outfit as PJ's not too long ago, because every morning I'd wake up to find that the pants had slipped off. I figured since it's a one piece, it would stay on no problem.

WRONG.

Every morning this is how I find my poor bear.

I just don't think he was made for clothes in general!
